Just outside of Olympia, Washington is a sustainable farm raising an unusual crop. And although it has a bird-like name, it has no feathers and takes to the sand, not the air.
If you’re from the Northwest, you know it well. But for all others, meet the infamous, beach-burrowing, space-alien-like creature with a very phallic side— the geoduck.
Essentially a large mud-burrowing clam, this duck has the uncanny ability to make many adults blush. Native to the Northwest Puget Sound area, it costs over $30 a pound and is considered a delicacy both here and in China.
And catching them is a challenge. We traveled to Taylor Shellfish Farms geoduck beach to give it a try.
The meaty part of a geoduck is actually several inches below the sand. They have a long neck that extends to the surface to breathe.
Surprisingly, they can burrow fast and you either have to dig quickly for them or, if you’re a professional farmer, remove the sand around them with a high-powered water jet and pull them out.
This segment has a lot of fun moments. One of my favorites is when the farmers conspire against Audrina as she learns how to use a water jet. And seeing her reactions as she grabs a geoduck for the first time is priceless.
